Built in the 15th c., the tower which stands in Żnin main market has always commanded attention. Popularly called Baszta (Defensive Tower), it has never really served a defence function. The brick edifice was supposed to protect city documents. It was both the town hall and an impressive symbol of Żnin dwellers’ wealth.

Over the centuries, the use of the building changed (it was in turns a prison, municipal archives, a fire department, and more). Currently, it houses the Museum of Pałuki Land’s exhibition on the town’s history.
